What's in a Mantra?

February 1, 2017

What is your mantra?

This question I ask myself and others frequently.  Its the last statement I ask at the end of each post. It is meant as a personal reflection question. One that you can ask yourself everyday.

Wikipedia defines the word Mantra as "a sacred utterance, a numinous sound, a syllable, word or phonemes, or group of words in Sanskrit believed by practitioners to have psychological and spiritual powers. A mantra may or may not have syntactic structure or literal meaning."

Mirriam-Webster defines the word as "a sound, word, or phrase that is repeated by someone who is praying or meditating: a word or phrase that is repeated often or that expresses someone's basic beliefs"

A word or phrase that may have a psychological power. Repeated often, and/or expresses someone's basic beliefs. How can one take these principals and apply them to our lives? How can we believe that we have the ability to change ourselves for the better?

Belief is a powerful force. Belief can will an individual to create powerful images, accomplish great tasks, and to do what many consider to be impossible. Belief can propel one on a journey of self discovery, change ones life, and impact others to find out for themselfs what matter to them.

How does one create this belief in themselves? There are many different ways, but one constant is having a routine. Wake up, brush your teeth, breakfast, getting dressed, saying goodbye to someone and then heading out to face the day. One can add a Mantra to that routine as a way of confirming that what you set out to accomplish will be completed, thus creating the belief in oneself about their abilities to perform.

Mantras are that belief. That sense of accomplishment. The focus to push through trials in life whatever they may be. Simple enough to be a focal point at the gym, and as complex as facing a large project for work. Mantras help center oneself from stress by a simple hum of the word OM, or by resisting the want to give up with a phrase to push forward.

No one can give you your belief. No one can define what Mantra you choose to believe in. You have to find out for yourself. Only you can push past your limits, whatever they may be. Others can cheer you on and support your endeavor, but in the end it is up to you to do the work and believe you can.

However you apply your Mantra in your daily life is completely up to you. How will you apply it? How will you move forward with it? Choose one or choose many. Improve yourself so that you can pass on your knowledge.

So I ask you... WHAT IS YOUR MANTRA?
